Simsbury is one of the most heavily wooded towns in the Farmington Valley, and if you park outside here you already know what that means. Sap in the summer. A yellow film every May. Leaf tannins in the fall that stain paint if they sit through a rain.
None of that comes off with a regular wash. Sap chemically bonds to clear coat and hardens. Pollen is mildly acidic and etches into the finish if it sits and gets wet. Both need decontamination — clay bar and a proper solvent — which is exactly what a full detail includes and a drive-thru wash doesn't.

Meet Benny
For fifteen years I waited tables at a Japanese restaurant. The pandemic took that job, somebody gave me a chance in car detailing, and I found something I didn't expect — I loved watching people's faces when they saw their car clean like never before. That reaction is still the reason I do this.

How do I get tree sap off my car without damaging the paint?
It needs a solvent that breaks the bond, then clay bar decontamination to lift what's left. Picking or scrubbing at hardened sap is what causes scratches.
Does pollen actually damage car paint?
It can. Pollen is mildly acidic, and when it gets wet and sits on the finish it can etch into the clear coat. Washing it off promptly matters more than most people realize.
Can you detail a car that's been sitting under a cover?
Yes, and it's worth doing before you put it away and again when you take it out. Cars that sit collect moisture and dust in places a moving car doesn't.
